Did you know that we are in the midst of the 100 deadliest days for driving? That’s what the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) calls the time span between the beginning of June and the end of August. Statistically speaking, August is the deadliest month in terms of car accidents. More miles are traveled in August than any other month, and August averaged the most crash deaths per day.
In this post, we’ll look at some of the main reasons why accidents happen in the summer time.

Night Driving

Road trips are a family tradition during the summer. And while they are intended for family fun, they also involve a lot of driving. Driving in the daylight can be hazardous, but driving at night nearly doubles the risk of a car accident occurring. Especially when you’re driving long distances and crossing unfamiliar territory, the chances of an accident increase.
Warning Sign: The most dangerous time of the day on the road is the two hours from 5 pm to 7 pm according to the NHTSA.

Drowsy Driving

Related to night driving is the danger of drowsy driving. How well can we expect anyone to drive when they’re having trouble staying awake? In a recent high profile case in nearby New Jersey, a truck driver who hadn’t rested in nearly 24 hours tragically rammed his vehicle into a bus containing a group of people including comedian Tracy Morgan.
Tip: If you find yourself wanting to fall asleep at the wheel, pull over when it’s safe and try to take a quick 30-minute power nap.

Teen Driving

Teen driving increases during the summer, as do accidents caused by teen drivers.

Unfortunately, teenagers aren’t often known for their carefulness. When teen drivers hit the roads they don’t always know what to do and that lack of experience ends up causing car accidents. Especially during these summer months when teens are out of school, they are more often on the roadways.

July 4

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says more crashes occur on July 4 than any other holiday. Alcohol played a factor in many of these accidents, the Institute said.
